Personality:

Not much is really known about Mike Ehrmantraut's past, and he's pretty much okay with that. He keeps it that way for a reason - in the business he's in, it's a pretty good idea to keep any sort of information that can be used against you to yourself.

What is known about Mike is that he used to be a cop, out in Philadelphia. For ten years, Mike handled issues such as break-ins and domestic disputes - the most notable case of which was a repeated domestic abuse instance between a couple. In this case, the man in question beat his girlfriend repeatedly, and each time that the cops were called, the girlfriend refused to press charges. This happened over and over, until one of the last times. Mike took the man out into the middle of nowhere, threatened him, and told him that if he ever hit the woman again, Mike would kill him. Two weeks later, the man bludgeoned the woman to death with the bottom of a blender.

This is a marked change in Mike's life. No half measures for Mike -- no letting his sense of right and wrong or his emotions get in the way of getting a job done. He's certainly not ruthless, and he doesn't enjoy violence for the sake of violence, but he has no remorse for any crimes he commits. No time for that. Everything that Mike does is efficient and quick.

Not only that, but he's also careful, and intelligent; shrewd, almost. He's loyal to the people he believes deserve his respect (and you have to earn that respect, you don't just get it), and he's good at following orders. He knows the ins and outs of criminals and the law, and he's pretty damn good at staying cool and collected. At one point during the series, he's called in to be interrogated about the death of Gustavo Fring, his former employer, and he's relaxed and at ease, knowing that he's covered all of his tracks and that the cops can't keep him in the station, seeing as they have no concrete proof.

He isn't much of a talker, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have any sort of personality. Mike tends to drift toward sarcastic and deadpan, and if he thinks what you've just said is stupid, he'll slow his speech down in his response, like he's speaking to a child. It's not that he thinks he's smarter than anybody else, it's just that generally, when he's dealing with people, he's got the benefit of years of experience. He knows his shit, and he dislikes people who act like they know it all when they so clearly don't. Because of this experience and calm demeanor, he inspires loyalty among the people who work for him, and he makes it a priority to make sure that each and every one of them is taken care of.

Mike has no patience for egos or drama, but for everything else? He's practically a saint. He's been known to be content to watch houses for hours at a time (most likely born from stakeout work) and somehow doesn't strangle Jesse Pinkman being obnoxiously bored in his car for eight hours.
